Liposuction and Cosmetic surgical procedures usually creates pooling of excess lymphatic fluids which results in swelling, tightness and discomfort with the patient.
Specialized Post Surgical-Lymphatic Drainage techniques can help accelerate recuperation.
Manual Lymphatic Drainage Massage (MLD) is a specialized massage technique that is recommended by plastic surgeons all over the world, after liposuction or cosmetic surgery, to accelerate the recuperation period.
MLD is the most efficient way to reduce swelling and bruising and is based on scientific knowledge of the anatomy and physiology of the Lymphatic System.
Some patients will experience lumpiness to the areas treated with liposuction, Smart-Lipo, or Cool Sculpting especially in the abdominal area and flanks, even more so if it is combined with other body contouring procedures (such as fat injections for what is popularly known as the Brazilian Butt Lift).
This is normal right after your procedure.
The lumpiness is caused by inflammation and trauma from the surgical instrument (cannula) that is used under the skin to extract the fatty tissue. The tunnels and channels which are created by the surgical instrument will fill with fluid and become swollen with both fluid and left-over fat.
This fluid and left-over fat tends to begin to harden between one week and three weeks after surgery.
There is a risk that the swelling and inflammation could turn into fibrosis, which is a permanent hardening of the area.
This process starts to develop in the proliferative stage of healing, about 21 days Post-Surgery.
Fat grafted areas will be avoided for at least 6 weeks Post-Surgery to achieve proper graft revascularization to the new area.
Recovery is the most important part of any surgery and can be tricky without the proper guidance. Cosmetic surgery procedures are planned well in advance, as should be your Post-Op After care. You have invested precious time, resources, and energy into planning your surgery. Be equally as discerning in planning your BEST recovery.
Doctors and surgeons say healing times can take anywhere from 6 months to a year but that’s without proper post-op care and proper supplies which cuts healing time down to 1-3 months.
Surgeons suggest coming in for just Manual Lymphatic Drainage 24-48 hours before the surgery date to jump start the lymph system, boost the white blood cell count and clean out your system preventing infection and reducing bruising before it even starts and mentally prepare you for recovery.

Many doctors prescribe Lymph Drainage Therapy after liposuction or other plastic surgery procedures to make sure their patients get the best possible results from their procedure.
Post Lipo/Cosmetic surgery massage in the first 3 months after the procedures helps to ensure optimal results and reduce healing time. Generally, the earlier, firmer, and more frequently you receive treatments, the better the results and less painful the area will be. Without specialized post-op massage, uneven results may form.
This Post Lipo/Cosmetic Surgery massage procedure works well and has been demonstrated to show positive results, only after a couple of massage treatments!
Post-op recovery sessions are suggested 2 – 3 times a week for optimal results with a minimum of 6 up to 18 sessions (sometimes more) depending how many procedures have been done and how many liters haven been taken out. Plastic Surgery Recovery can still make a tremendous difference 6 months to a year after surgery!
During these treatments we spend a lot of time educating on how to properly maintain your results and to take care of yourself. during the recovery process.
Every patient is different; however, most doctors advise their patients to begin their Post-Op Care as soon as possible to obtain the best, and fastest, results.
The longer you wait, the more difficult it can be to encourage the tissue toward greater pliability, so you can really benefit from the work in those critical first few weeks after surgery.
Liposuction/BBL – 4 days Post Surgery, incisions are covered with bandages during massage
Abdominoplasty – when drains are removed, incision is covered with tape
Facelift – 1 Week Post Surgery, after staples are removed
Patricia does NOT provide incisional drainage therapy – It is out of Scope of Practice for Registered Massage Therapists and Certified Lymphedema Therapists.
No incisions will be opened nor bodily fluids will be pushed out of surgical incisions.
Six treatments post-operative is most often enough, if the only area of liposuction was the legs, abdomen or breast augmentation.
People getting multiple procedures done at once such as liposuction to the abdomen, flanks, Lipo 360, tummy tuck, breast augmentation and fat grafting (BBL) require up to 18 sessions or more.
